The State of Demand Generation: 2026 Benchmark Report

What 519 B2B marketers told us about demand generation in 2026

Most demand generation programs generate activity. Very few produce pipeline that converts. We surveyed senior leaders to find out why even the most well-resourced teams still struggle to demonstrate impact.

Uncover the contributing factors to:

  • pipeline pressure
  • buyer intelligence gaps
  • the shift away from volume-led

The findings in this report are not predictions or best-practice frameworks. They're a direct account of where demand generation is right now and the failures that quietly corrade board confidence.

45%

Buyer intelligence gaps are costing pipeline velocity

The biggest blind spot: identifying what triggers rising intent. Teams know which accounts look like buyers. They cannot tell which ones are buying right now. Without that signal, targeting is assumption, not diagnosis.

28%

The fragmented vendor stack is a competitive liability

Marketers are assembling an intent signal from three or four platforms, each with partial visibility. The intelligence degrades at every handoff, and the campaign brief that results reflects the noise, not the signal.

43%

Lead quality is the primary success metric for 2026

Ahead of sales alignment (37%) and pipeline velocity (35%). Volume-led programs are being rejected at board level. The market has moved — and the demand generation programs still optimizing for MQL count are the last to know.

33%

Tool cost is locking mid-market teams out of buyer intelligence

Enterprise ABM platforms run $60k-$200k+ annually. That pricing excludes the majority of this survey's respondents. The accessibility gap is real, and it's widening. The answer is not a cheaper platform. It's a different model.

33%

Inability to measure whether their demand generation program is producing pipeline

Measurement and attribution is the leading challenge ,by a significant margin. Not because teams lack tools, but because most programs generate activity data and report it as pipeline data. The two are not the same.

The data does not describe a capability problem. It describes a structural one: teams are buying intelligence in fragments, activating without a complete view, and measuring outputs instead of pipeline contribution. The fix is not another tool. It is a different model.

The top six blind spots share a structural cause. Each reflects a gap in connecting data across sources. Teams are not failing to analyze well. They are working with incomplete datasets assembled from disconnected platforms.

Lack topics to personalize follow-up messaging at account level

39%

Cannot map cross-functional buying behavior across the committee

39%

Cannot connect anonymous activity to known contacts

45% of respondents cannot identify what triggers rising intent in an account. This is the most critical signal in demand generation — the difference between reaching a buyer before they engage a competitor, and after. Without it, the target account list is guesswork.

These are observed performance differences across campaigns where buyer intelligence preceded campaign activation, compared to equivalent campaigns built on firmographic targeting alone.
